Watch out for online DIY – how to make safe cosmetics

There are countless inspiring DIY natural cosmetics recipes and tips on Pinterest, Instagram, and YouTube. Surveys have shown that up to one-quarter of people who try DIY natural cosmetics recipes online experience a skin reaction. The situation is similar with skin care tips. Here, I'll show you what you need to keep in mind to create safe natural cosmetics.

Citric acid for wrinkles, lime and baking soda as deodorant, vitamin E in hot oil, activated charcoal for everything, zinc ointment for babies, and essential oils galore. A wealth of information, a plethora of contradictions, and a ton of misinformation that already makes me feel sorry for the skin of those affected who try these recipes at home. Ayaaaa!

How to make safe natural cosmetics

To make sure that your skin care is safe, I have put together a few points that are essential for me personally:

  • Keep it simple, less can be more
  • Better safe than sorry* – if you are not yet familiar with the topic or also like the philosophy of water-free natural cosmetics If you follow and love it as much as we do, we recommend recipes that don't require water. This eliminates the risk of dangerous microbial contamination, plus the recipes also offer various benefits for your skin and the environment.
  • Know the raw materials, their origin and quality. I recommend raw materials in Demeter or organic quality , unrefined and Cold-pressed . Research thoroughly and/or seek additional advice from a drugstore, natural beauty salon, or similar. Store the raw materials properly, including oils and shea butter, in a cool, dark place.
  • Make sure you are aware of trustworthy Sources (check the authors and their knowledge as well as any online reviews). This is especially important online, as there is a lot of nonsense. Offline, there are great Books on the subject.
  • Follow our 6 most important basic rules  for making your DIY natural cosmetics.
  • Be careful with essential oils. Use them with extreme caution. Yes, I keep saying it!
  • Stay away from DIY sunscreen.

If you follow these tips, you can let your creativity run wild and create beautiful, safe natural cosmetics. Whether for your own use or as a gift, spread the word to inspire more and more people to embrace healthy, holistic skincare.

Tip

I strongly recommend conducting a small “compatibility test” on the sensitive inner part of your forearm before using a product for the first time.

Batch test on the forearm to see if you can tolerate the product

The sensitive inner part of the forearm is particularly suitable for a tolerance test. Apply a small amount of the product or raw material and wait up to 24 hours to see if a reaction occurs.
